Climate of Uttar Pradesh
- Generally – tropical monsoon climate
- Hottest summer – Agra, Jhansi
- The rainfall decreases from east to west.
- Highest rainfall in plains – Gorakhpur
- Minimum Rainfall – Mathura
Due to geographical disparities, there are regional climatic differences in Uttar Pradesh. However, the climate of Uttar Pradesh in general is tropical monsoonal . There are three seasons in a year-
Summer season- As the Sun moves towards the Tropic of Cancer, the temperature of the state starts increasing and reaches its highest point in June, at this time the Sun shines directly on the Tropic of Cancer.
In summer, the average temperature of the state ranges from 36⁰C to 39C and the average minimum temperature is 21⁰C to 23C and the average temperature difference is 14⁰C.
Due to the proximity of the Tropic of Cancer in this season, the temperature of Bundelkhandian cities like Allahabad, Kanpur, Fatehpur, Agra, Banda, Chitrakoot, Mahoba, Jhansi, Hamirpur, Jalaun, Lalitpur etc. reaches 40⁰ to 47⁰C.
In this season, especially in the month of May-June, the westerly winds become intense, which is called ‘Loo’. The highest summer is in Agra and Jhansi and the lowest in Bareilly.
Rainy season – The monsoon (East) rising from the Bay of Bengal enters and advances from the eastern and south-eastern tip of the state in the third-fourth week of June. Some part of this monsoon leaves straight west while raining but some part moves northwards and comes back again after hitting the Himalayas. Due to this retreating monsoon, there is a lot of rain in the lowlands of the state.
Some rainfall from the south-west monsoon occurs in the plateau and western plains of the region.
There is variation in the amount of rainfall in different parts of the state. While on the one hand Gorakhpur region receives maximum rainfall, on the other hand Mathura receives the least rainfall.
About 83% of the total rainfall of the state falls in this season (July to September), the rest is in winters and summers.
In this season the average highest temperature of the state is 32 to 34⁰C and the minimum temperature is 25⁰C and the average temperature difference is 7-8⁰C.
Winter season- Winter starts in the state from November and continues to drop in temperature till January. January is the coldest month in the state. In winter, there is a great difference in the temperature of different parts of the state. While the mean maximum temperature is 28.3⁰C and the mean minimum temperature is 13.3C in the southern hills and plateau regions, it ranges from 27.2⁰C to 11.7⁰C in the plains.
The temperature decreases from south to north in the winter season in the state.
In the north-western districts, the average temperature in winter is the lowest in all other regions, around 10⁰C. When there is snowfall in Uttaranchal, the region gets cold and increases.
In winter, due to the entry of cyclones originating from the Mediterranean regions into India via Pakistan, western Uttar Pradesh receives more than 10 cm of rainfall, which is beneficial for the Rabi crop.
