Alexander Graham Bell was born in Scotland to Edinburgh. They were raised in Boston, Massachusetts in the United States. It was in Boston that he opened a school for the deaf. बेल को टेलीफोन का जन्मदाता होने का श्रेय प्राप्त है। इस आविष्कार की बदौलत संचार की दुनिया में अभूतपूर्व क्रांति हुई और देखते-देखते दुनिया भर में टेलीफोन लोगों की दिनचर्या में शुमार हो गया।

एक बार वे बेतार के तार यंत्र के कारखाने में गए जहां उनकी मुलाकात इलेक्ट्रिक इंजीनियर थॉमस वाटसन से हुई। जल्द ही दोनों गरीकनने लगी। बेल यंत्रों के नक्शे बनाते और वाटसन मॉडल। 2 जून, 1875 की बात है कि बेल वाटसन के साथ टेलीग्राफी संबंधी प्रयोग कर रहे थे। तार से कई संदेश भेजने की धुन में उन्होंने सोचा कि क्यों न ध्वनि संदेश भेजा जाए। टेलीग्राफ के रिसीवर पर एक कमरे में बेल थे और दूसरे कमरे में वाटसन । सामान्य संदेश के बाद वाटसन ने उंगली मारकर ध्वनि पैदा की तो वह बेल तक पहुंची। खुशी से बदहवास बेल भागकर वाटसन के कमरे में गए और चीख उठे कि मैंने तुम्हारी उंगली की आवाज सुनी है। इसके बाद उन्होंने कुछ और प्रयोग किए और ऐसा मनचाहा यंत्र बनाने में कामयाब रहे, जिससे दूरी पर बैठे दो लोग एक-दूसरे की आवाज सुन सकते थे। इस यंत्र पर उनके बोले पहले बोल थे—'वाटसन ! वाटसन, यहां आओ। मुझे तुम्हारी जरूरत है।' सन् 1876 में उन्होंने टेलीफोन बनाने का पेटेंट प्राप्त कर लिया और अगले ही साल बेल टेलीफोन कंपनी की नींव डाल दी। उन्होंने अपने यंत्र का अनेक देशों में प्रदर्शन किया और वाहवाही बटोरी। सन् 1915 में जब 3400 मील लंबी समुद्रतटीय लाइन के उद्घाटन का मौका आया तो स्वाभाविक तौर पर टेलीफोन के जन्मदाता ग्राहम बेल को न्यूयार्क से बुलाया गया। उनके आग्रह पर दूसरे सिरे पर वाटसन बैठे और बरसों बाद बेल ने फिर कहा'वाटसन, यहां आना, मुझे तुम्हारी जरूरत है।' 75 वर्ष की आयु में जब उनकी मृत्यु हुई तो सारे अमेरिका में श्रद्धांजलि स्वरूप टेलीफोन एक मिनट बंद रहे।
